Welcome to Random Lake Middle School
Random Lake Middle School currently serves about 260 students in grades five through eight. In keeping with the middle school model, each grade is considered a “house”. The teachers in each house officially meet at least weekly to cooperatively plan for each week. Collaboration between staff members actually occurs much more than once a week. This process allows them to share instructional ideas and coordinate activities so that similar concepts can be taught across the curriculum. The planning also examines which strategies work so that teachers are better prepared to meet the individual needs of students. Collaborative planning is critical for developing improvement plans. All students in grades five through eight receive instruction in the five core areas – reading, math, English language arts, science and history.
All students also participate in physical education and art. All fifth and sixth grade students study music. Music is optional for seventh and eighth graders. Choir and band are popular choices. Choir students may also try out for Silhouettes or Ram Express, two performance choir groups. Eighth grade band students may also perform the high school jazz band. During their time in middle school, students will study human growth and development offerings, computer applications and Spanish. Computer application is taught throughout the middle school. Random Lake has made a commitment to building 21st century skills into our curriculum, therefore all MS students are assigned an Android tablet as a means of enhancing education through technology integration.
A full range of special education services is provided for appropriate middle school students. The gifted and talented program is also available to better meet the needs of high ability students. A full-time guidance counselor serves students individually, in small groups and in whole class settings. Interscholastic athletic teams include wrestling, volleyball, cross county and boys and girls basketball. Other sports are offered through community groups, consistent with conference schools. Students may participate in organizations such as student council, media club, battle of the books competition, Modern Woodmen competition, school musical, and math team as well as the aforementioned musical and athletic groups.
